Historical Background

Prospect House is a 'Listed' late 18th century farmhouse, which was owned by the Buchanan family. In the early 19th century Robert Buchanan had as 'Commander of the Browne Revenue Cruiser' been responsible to Lord Sligo (family name- Browne) for policing the bay, thwarting as best he could the then rampant trade in contraband liquor. Westport harbour was part of Lord Sligo’s demesne, as was the town of Westport itself.

Apart from the rugged beauty of its hillside landscape, the unique charm and interest of Prospect lies in the visibility of the marks of man etched on its surface over three millennia; standing stones within sight of the crown of Croagh Patrick: the remains of an ancient cashel standing within a double-ram parted ring fort: the foundations and bullaun stone of an early Christian church.

The Estate

Apart from the house, gardens,  walled orchard and kitchen garden, the estate comprises over 200 acres of field, broadleaf woodland and lakes. It is surrounded by hills from which Croagh Patrick may be climbed and overlooks Westport and Clew Bays. There are miles of trails through old hazel, birch, ash and oak woodland, hiding the ruins of pre-famine cottages with their field walls, and carpeted in spring with bluebells in autumn abundant in mushrooms. There are spectacular views over Clew Bay to Achill, Clare Island and the Nephin Range.
